With over 70 years of painting and photography experience, Charles Rains has created paintings depicting nature in its many forms often inspired from his photographs. Charles became interested in painting at the age of 12 when he completed his first oil painting. His formal training did not come until the age of 30 when he attended Sargent’s School of Fine Art in Detroit where he studied air brush art and automotive renderings. Following the completion of art school, Charles was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy in the mid 1950’s where he spent 2 years aboard an oil tanker with the 7th fleet in the Philippines and Japan. Charles enjoys nature and has been an avid photographer his entire life. This interest in nature led to taking thousands of photos while hiking in the western United States, the great state of Michigan, and particularly his farm in Michigan’s thumb region. The subjects in his photographs show up in many of his paintings. Charles has a unique ability to capture nature’s beauty in his photographs and bring it to life in his oil and watercolor paintings. Charles expanded his formal training in 2010 when he joined a group of international artists located in England and learned seascapes and landscapes with Alan Kingswell, a highly acclaimed English artist. Most recently, he was accepted into a group studying with world renowned International impressionist artist, Robert Hagen.
